If you've been keeping backyard chickens for a while, you already know the problem with timber coops. They look great for the first season, then the Australian sun gets to work. Warping, rotting, mite infestations in every crack and crevice, and a cleaning routine that takes longer than it should. Eventually you're patching something that probably isn't worth patching anymore.
We've just added two elevated plastic chicken coops to the Austral Ag range, and they're worth a proper look if you're starting a new flock or finally ready to upgrade.
Why should I choose a plastic chicken coop?
Both coops are made from UV stabilised recycled plastic - 7 to 8mm thick with a smooth, non-porous surface. That means no rotting, no warping, no cracking, and nowhere for mites to hide between cleans. When it's time to clean, you hose it down and you're done. No scrubbing out timber grain, no treating with chemicals. It's a genuinely low-maintenance setup that holds up in Australian conditions year after year.
Both coops sit elevated on legs with 27cm of ground clearance. This serves a few purposes - it improves airflow underneath, provides sheltered space your hens can use during the day, and keeps the coop off damp ground which extends its life. Both include two perches and two nesting boxes, wide-opening access doors, adjustable ventilation, and a secure locking mechanism to keep foxes and predators out at night.
The Pitched Roof Coop: for growing flocks and flexible needs
The Pitched Roof Elevated Plastic Chook House comes in three sizes, making it the more flexible option if you're not sure exactly how many hens you'll end up with.
The small suits up to 4 hens and starts at $699.95. The medium handles up to 6 hens at $849.95. The large accommodates up to 8 hens at $999.95. It comes in a white and grey colourway that suits most garden settings, and the pitched roof gives it a classic chook house profile.
This is the one to choose if you're starting with a smaller flock and might want to scale up or if you're buying for a gift and aren't certain of the recipient's flock size. The range of sizes gives you options.
The Flat Roof Coop: for the modern garden aesthetic
The Flat Roof Elevated Plastic Chook House is a single size suited to up to 6 medium hens, priced at $999.95. It comes in a contemporary sage green that works well in more design-conscious garden spaces - the kind where the coop is visible from the back deck and you'd prefer it to look intentional rather than functional.
The flat roof profile has a cleaner, more architectural look than the pitched version. If you're setting up a dedicated poultry area in a landscaped garden or you simply prefer the sage green colourway over white and grey, this is the one for you.
Optional droppings trays are available separately for both coops, which make the regular clean-out considerably faster.
Which chicken coop will suit my flock?
If flock size flexibility matters or you're buying for a smaller backyard with fewer hens, start with the Pitched Roof. The three size options give you genuine choice and the entry price point is lower.
If you have a mid-sized flock of up to 6 hens and you care about how the coop looks in your garden, the Flat Roof in sage green is a strong choice. It's purpose-built for that one configuration and does it well.
Both coops are available online at australag.au or for pick up at our Toowoomba store. If you have questions about which size or style suits your setup, give the team a call on (07) 4588 6789.
